This trackball is simply the best. There are nicer ones out there, but from a cost/benefit standpoint they are not a wise buy. This one has all the features most people will need for intense surfing, prolonged gaming, and design work.
The device functions flawlessly, and the ergonomics are perfect too. The logitech command center software makes the device very customizable. The software is VERY well made, in my experience. I have never had the problems with it that i have read of on other websites.
The only problem i have with this device is the USB receiver. It is bulky and obnoxious, a real eyesore. What is more, it has remarkably poor reception. If it is turned just a few degrees away from the desk i use (only seven feet from receiver) it will intermittently loose signal. Logitech should really use one of their thumb sized receivers for this unit.
But all in all, its a real winner.

Absolutely THE best trackball EVER!!! Perfect size and weight for extensive use. Perfect ergonomics - whoever designed the layout deserved to receive a HUGE bonus for his outstanding work.
I've been using this model on my primary workstation ever since it was released and am currently on my 3rd replacement unit. Yes, the contact under the left button does eventually wear out, but its life can be extended to about 3 years by employing just a couple tricks. First, configuring Button 5 to provide double-click functionality and using that rather than double pumping the left button reduces the wear somewhat. Second, judicious use of of the Draglock button, instead of holding down the left button while dragging, helps enormously.
Other than upgrading its left button contact assembly with a stouter one, the only change I would make to the TrackMan if I were managing the its product team would be to migrate its operation to the new Unified receiver used by many of the newer Logitech products, such as my K800 keyboard.
I maintain a stockpile of these units for fear that Logitech will someday discontinue the TrackMan without offering a suitable replacement (as if there could ever be such a thing). Long live the Optical TrackMan, the indisputable king of pointing devices!

I just love this model. Got my firs one a couple of years ago. It is still working, but the ball does not roll easy enough (yes, I clean it every week). It was very hard to find the same model in a local store. Finally I did find it. As before it works perfectly fine. All except the base, which failed a week after the purchase. So I am using a base from a wireless mouse.
The only thing I wish Logitech did is made the same exact model but wired. I hate running to a store in the middle of the night for a pair of AA batteries.

I bought one with my 1st PC in January 2008. Having used both trackballs and mice on ATC radars,I was convinced of the convenience of trackballs over mice. I was rapidly very satisfied with this product's ergonomy and features, even the possibility to scroll using the ball. Eventually it suddenly failed 18 months after in July 2009 ,due to an electronic component I suppose, because there was no more pointer available whatever I did to retrieve it. As I needed rapidly another one, I bought via the Logitec online store Europe; cost : nearly 100 €.
Now,in last December (2011), I started to have problems with the left click, which had become sluggish and not working at every impulse. I opened the casing and introduced a little KF spray for contacts within the related microswitch and got a better working.
Last week (Feb 2012),the same problem with the left click showed again. Irritated,I opened the casing again and put all the pieces apart to examine and clean them.
This is what I found : the left click lever which pushes the microswitch was indented on its H shaped part precisely where it meets the microswitch little bossage. The microswitch bossage is hard plastic and the actuating lever plain soft polyethylene I suppose. I glued a little thin (0.3 mm) metallic pad on the damaged lever after careful removing of the corresponding thickness with a cutter to keep the clearance between the two pieces, and the left click is working again as new.
I think these problems could easily be addressed by the Logitec Engineering Dpt if only they were interested in quality. After all, this is not a cheap product. Hoping to be heard.

I have purchased two of these trackman and still disappointed. While I love the design, the quality is still very poor. The left click will wear out after a while and it becomes really annoying to use. I wish they would make it more durable.

i bought this even though some said it was not that comfortable.
now i know why the thumb buttons are to far back so you have to keep you thumb bent so that is a pain.it looks good it feels good the buttons just need to be placed better.if they would make a wireless mouse similar to the marble it would be perfect i have used a marble at work for years and love it i get no hand pain all day. i have a wireless trackman pro at home that is what i want to replce this with as i get hand pain from my hand resting on keyboard slide out while i use it and if you are on the cpu for a while it will start to hurt.
i hope logitech can come out with a new and improved one of these as i sendi ng back i would rather deal with some lower hand pain than a uncomfortable bent thumb!

I have used the Wireless Optical Trackman now for over 12 years... I am currently on my second. As a professional Software Developer I am on the computer all of the time developing screens, etc and I am all over the screen most of the time. This is where the "Track Ball" really shines. Also, I HATE to continually move my hand. With this device, I NEVER move my hand so I can use it all day, no problem. The only negative is the "Wireless" connection. This is an older model and does not support the new "Unify" technology. If I even have a coffee cup between the receiver module and the trackman. the movement will get real choppy so I will have to move the cup. ONE LAST COMMENT... I just purchased the M570 wireless Trackball and it's even more AWESOME then this so I am making the change, as the M570 is smaller, lighter, and has some other features the older one doesn’t have. With my WAVE KB and my M570, my Logitech PC Surround Sound speakers, etc., I am in Programmer Heaven... I don't think you can go wrong with either device, the choice would be purely subjective based on personal tastes and likes. There both GREAT!

I have owned several of these balls. Love them or I would have never owned more than one. That being said it is about time for me to get a new one. Please update it to the current decade. The old connection you are using on this ball is trash. If you can't update it to the new standards please put this rodent back on a leash. Change nothing else just fix the wireless functions. If you are looking to buy this ball think of it as wired not wireless for all real world applications.
Quality Performance and Features only receive low marks due to TERRIBLE wireless.
PS. Ignore the people talking about making it left handed or ambidextrous. Only the wireless needs updated. And possibly multiple DPI settings.

I say this is the second best trackball is because I also have a MS trackball explorer on my desktop that I have used forever and is the most comfortable trackball I have ever used. Now with that said I use the Logitech on my laptop and allows me hours of playing MMO's with out having my wrist feel like it's got pins sticking in it. This mouse has great features, nice button placement, and response times.
The only drawback I have is the USB receiver that plugs into computer. Since I use this on a laptop I have to Velcro the receiver to the lid of my computer and after a while the cord gets worn out and it stops working. I know Logitech makes the "stick" receivers for some of their other wireless mice/keyboards so I don't understand why they don't do it for this one, or have a compatibility list and allow you to order just the receiver.
All in all it's a great product and the receiver is the only thing that keeps me from giving this a perfect score.

I have used this mouse for years. This is the most comfortable mouse ever. I loved it because not everyone is used to the finger tip ball movement instead of the whole wrist movement and when they thought they wanted to use my computer, they would stop because they were afraid of trying something new and something that hurts less when you use a mouse day in and day out. They only thing I do not like about this mouse is it's not as portable as I would like and the wireless dongle is a corded monstrosity. Why hasn't Logitech come out with the small almost hidden connector like on the rest of the mice?

From the start = 20 years ago I have used trcakball mouses only. Originally, the idea was to use any mouse with your worse/left hand and leave the better hand for something more important. Today such trackballs are nonexistent. What Logitech should do; all 3 are musts:
1. A symmetric trackball, good for left and right hand. The ball should be in the middle (as in Trackman Marble corded) to be used by finger tips (not by thumb!).
2. Scroll wheel with right/left jump (important for MS Excel work).
3. Wireless/cordless with unifying features.
Otherwise, by years of experience I fully agree with what has been said about the old cordless Trackman: connection, wears out, peels off etc. And it isn't easy to use by left hand. The new trackball is not suitable for left hand at all, and is no good for right hand either.

There are so few trackballs available, and this one from logitech is a truly masterful design. If it were given a few options, it would be the unbeatable hands down greatest ever mouse. It fits the hand perfectly, allowing hours of use without strain. The sensitivity can be set so that a flick of the fingertip moves the pointer anywhere on the monitor almost effortlessly. The buttons are intuitive, programmable, and offer an ease of use and utility not found in many other products. Just saying, I love this device. A few things that I've seen in reviews, and have experienced myself, is that over time the left-click button deteriorates, so that clicking becomes a matter of mashing down the button, or it wears out completely so the mouse has to be replaced. The software can be jicky, too, with the connectivity suddenly gone, and the battery wearing down without the software giving a warning. And the soft touch coating tends to peel off over time, making for a nasty-looking/feeling mouse. Logitech offers mice that are optionally wired/cordless...why not this one? It wouldn't be beyond their capacity to offer that option. Or even just to offer a corded model. It's a trackball--it doesn't have to move, so a cord would not be much of an issue! And that wouldn't require battery replacement or have connectivity issues. Or it could be made rechargeable. So...to review...with a bit more quality in the buttons, a slick plastic instead of soft touch, and a cord, this would be the perfect pointing device. But as it is, it's the best one on the market, hands down.

having seen plenty of trackball designs that look ridiculus to even think of how they came about, besides someone thinking it'd be smart to use 2 hands or a thumb to point with. this one is actually designed great and the only one I've seen that uses the natural choice of finger(s) to steer the ball with, as well as being just about the right size for even my large hands.
however that clunky wired receiver that comes with it has got to be it's greatest downfall. alongside it's lack of appearance in local computer stores.
Stop improving your other defunct trackball designs and invest in the one useful design that you already have with this trackball by upgrading it's wireless components and getting it into stores instead of those ugly & useless thumb & palm ball designs of yours.

I enjoy using this mouse except for one thing: the software is quirky and the trackball becomes un-responsive. It is very annoying. I am on Windows 7 using Office 2010. Everything works smoothly for awhile when, suddenly, the cursor becomes sluggish. I spin the ball and the cursor does not move or moves erratically. I get the cursor over a link and have to click the left-click button 3 or 4 times before it actually takes. If I want to scroll down a page I click once in the right scroll-bar; nothing happens. I click two more times; nothing happens. Then suddenly the page moves down a lot, maybe to the very end of the document. When I am editing a document the cursor gets stuck in selection-mode. As the cursor moves everything is selected and I am not pressing any button.
When this behavior occurs I have to reboot my PC. I feel like I am fighting the cursor rather than it working with me. Very annoying. Two co-workers have earlier versions, which works well for them. This one I'm about ready to throw away.

My desktop is cluttered with mice and trackballs - all Logitech products. My system is a MacBook Pro and it is normally set up as a desktop with external monitor and the Logitech S530 Desktop for Mac - that is both a keyboard and mouse. Love the keyboard feel - I have arthritis in my hands so the effortless and accurate keystrokes (plus those handy "special" buttons) make typing easy and almost painless. While the mouse is wonderful, after an hour gripping the mouse it starts to hurt.
Step in the Performance MX - the great feel and features plus the high arch and width make it a better choice but even that gets to me after a few hours.
Move on to the tried and true Marble Mouse (I have one of these at work) - great device but limited on features (click and forward/back buttons) - still good for work where we are restricted from installing ANY software.
Now comes the Cordless Optical TrackMan - about the only feature it does not have is a back massage!. The size means I do not need to grip the device hence the hands do not hurt. The extra features are very intuitive though I still sometimes hit the wrong thumb button. The only feature I miss is the left-right scroll - or did I overlook something?
Today I would not be without this trackball device! I will occasionally still go back to the Performance MX mouse if a mouse better suits the need but the Optical TrackMan is by far the preferred pointing device.
I will note that I had not seen or heard of this trackball until I saw it displayed in a TV show and knew it had to be a Logitech product by the design and color!

This is the third Optical Trackman I have owned. My hands shake at times and I can't control mouse pointer with the logitech Model M570 they sell at stores. You have to use your thumb to control the pointer on that one, and it is a lot harder. It is also not as well made. Had to go on line to find this one.

I have been using this model trackball for 10+ years, currently on my 3rd purchased. While it works great for general use as well as gaming I'd love it even more if it had 2 simple upgrades. 1st - adapt it to use the unifying receiver, i recently started using the K800 keyboard and would like to have both devices on one receiver. 2nd - make it rechargeable, another feature i like about the K800. These 2 changes would give it 5 stars across the board in my opinion

I am programmer. On the mouse on and off all day. I absolutely love this mouse. For the sake of improvement I will suggest 3 things in hopes Logitech is reading this.
1) Please make this mouse compatible with the little bluetooth dongle your keyboards use. IR on such a high end trackball is offensive and adds desktop clutter.
2) Please fix the feet issue someone below stated.
3) Please remove the lip on the ball housing. It makes grime removal more difficult. And while I believe the recessed hole the ball pins sit on is so that dirt can be pressed downward away from the ball it also makes cleaning somewhat challenging.
2 and 3 are super picky items. I believe the combination of these three would take this mouse from a high end trackball to the industry leader.
I own 3.
