When I first purchased this mouse, I wasn't certain what I was getting myself into - I'd never owned a mouse that wasn't symmetrically shaped. (it fit fine, speaking as a female gamer)
The first thing I noticed upon plugging this sucker into my computer was... laser mice don't like fabric mouse pads. They're not terribly fond of textured laminate, either. However! They work fabulously on paper, very slightly textured plastics, arm rests (leather, anyway), and anything else that isn't very porous. Paper with a lot of art, or varied black on blank, may cause problems, but less contrasting differences (lined paper) work fine.
They also don't like pet hair. As long as I'm using the mouse on the proper surface, the ONLY reason the mouse will act up on me (100% of the time, I tell you!) was because some small strand of dog hair had found its way up into the tracking area. Easy enough to remove (tweezers are your friend).
After experiencing a laser mouse for the fist time, I will never be content with an optical mouse again. It's been steadier and more responsive than any optical mouse I've ever used.
I use the scroll wheel pretty often, though I don't use it for clicking. It's not hard to click with it, but it's not a super soft click either. It's just at an awkward angle for me (possibly due to smaller hands). I've made occasional use of the sideways scrolling, and that's quite simple and easy as well - easier than clicking was.
I use the Back button on the side quite often, but the Forward button is just slightly out of comfortable reach for me (and rather small). I'm not sure how they could improve upon that, though, and still allow the back button to remain universally helpful to all hand sizes.
I've had my mouse for about three years now (I think? when did it come out?) and have had only one minor complaint about it, mostly in the last year. The little feet near the palm of my hand started to "slide" off of their adhesive, and would gum up slightly on my mouse pad, and various small debris would stick to the adhesive instead. It's rather... icky. Both have come off completely now. I understand the need for mouse feet, but something that snapped into the base would be more pleasing to me. Perhaps it's the Arizona heat that does it, but even so, three years with a single mouse that's used heavily 365 days a year is a very good run.
I've used it enough that my palm has rubbed off part of the silver stripe, revealing the white plastic beneath.
My biggest problem now is to replace the thing... I'm looking at the G9 now!
