Before MX5500 I had Cordless Desktop® LX 700.
Comparing with LX700 (10), MX5500, in my opinion is a 3. The mouse is ok. All below is for the keyboard.
PROs:
- silent
- built-in display
- bluetooth technology (more range)
CONs
- no support for OSD
- built-in display not usefull (you cannot see anything on it)
- volume / media playback keys not easy to use
Overall, it's a good keyboard but I will not recomend to anyone else. The best keyboard ever from Logitech was/is Cordless Desktop® LX 700.

I've had this combo for going on 3 years (will be 3trs in late august). first year was great, I had no performance issues, I LOVE the screen w/ temp, time, and a complete calculator. frankly, the calculator is the only thing keeping me from buying a new keyboard.
but... and this is a big one... after about a year, the keys started to get sticky. the key action has gotten so bad now that if you don't press straight down at the key it will completely bind. this is definitely a plastics issue. something is degrading in the key or body plastic that is causing them to stick. I took the whole thing apart and applied a bit of white lithium grease to the key stems about a year ago. that helped for about a week, but that's it.
the mouse has been pretty solid other than normal diminishing battery life until tonight (which prompted me to see if logitec had released a new version of this 3+ year old flagship wireless model, which they haven't. SO disappointed). anyway, the mouse 'locked' the horizontal movement for a few minutes until i smacked it on the table a few times. vertical movement worked fine, but the cursor wouldn't move sideways. I'd expect that in a ball mouse... not a laser.
overall, it's a solid keyboard. I really wish it worked like it did when it was new. only thing I'd add is some way to access the keyboard screen on your computer to send custom information. and perhaps more functions on the on-board calculator.

First of all, I've had used this keyboard and mouse combo for about 8 months, SO I've really gotten a chance to use it. I will rate them separately,
The mouse: The mouse is the best part. Not going to ramble, I had this mouse before from a separate puchase, big fan, no complaints here.
The keyboard: I like everything about this keyboard, EXCEPT, I may be the only one, but it surely slows my typing down. The buttons are a little bigger than a standard keyboard so it takes a little while to get used to. Once I got used to it, I noticed I was typing slower so I switched back to a standard keyboard and the difference in speed is unreal. My speed on a normal size keyboard is out of this world.
For me, it's all about performance.

Paired the mx 5500 with my eeslate instead of using the windows bluetooth keyboard with my device. For the first time ever, both the keyboard and mouse do pretty much everything AND are bluetooth capable. The bluetooth has never lost its connection in either the mouse or keyboard. I do not think the technology gets better than this for tablet workstations, at least for now.

I'll start by saying the fact that the set is bluetooth is great if you want to use it on a media center, but don't expect the dongle to be a big hit. also, don't expect a high-level precision from the mouse. I mainly use Illustrator and Photoshop on my pc, and the cursor keeps jumping around.
the keyboard is nice though, can't say a bad word about logitech when it comes to keyboards. the keys are soft and silent, and it's great to be able to use macros when you want things done fast.
all in all, as a set, logitech fell short from their standard and i think they have some things to re-evaluate.

I’ve really enjoyed all the features and to performance of this keyboard/mouse combo for about two years. But recently, the right click button on the mouse started only working periodically, then quit altogether. It’s a bit disappointing because I understand this mouse cannot be purchased separate from the keyboard. My hope was that this product would last several years, especially for the price, but unfortunately that is not the case.

The keyboard is great. I love all of the extra keys that make my life so much easier. The integrated calculator is extremely useful as well. I use it on a daily basis. The only real complaint: the display is impossible to read. It is at the perfect angle to reflect any ceiling lights and block the actual display. It either needs to be tilted more toward the user or be adjustable. Other than that, everything else is great.

I've had this mouse/keyboard combo for more than 3 years now and I have to say that it's performed outstandingly. I play a lot of games, including FPS, Action-Adventure, etc, and never once have I detected a laggy response or felt that I lost because the hardware failed me.
The design is comfortable enough. I'm not super picky about specific ergonomics, but even with several hours of gaming I've never felt cramped or sore. The wrist rest on the keyboard may be a teeny bit on the hard side, but it's been indestructible for 3 years, so I consider it a worthwhile trade. The mouse feels fairly solid and controlled, but maybe lacks the weight of some of the competition gaming mice (ie Razer). Overall I think the mouse feels very smooth and the grip is very comfortable.
I find the LCD screen on the keyboard to be mostly useless and gimmicky. I set it to tell me the ambient temperature of the room, which is a neat feature, but really not pertinent to computer use in any way.
The battery life is really outstanding. The low-battery indicator on the keyboard doesn't come on for several months (maybe close to a year?). The first time this happened I replaced the batteries right away, but the second time it happened I let it slide and it continued to perform with flying colors for at least a couple more months! The mouse lasts at least 3 days with heavy use (weeks with light use) and charges up in a few hours.
I found the software that came with the bundle to be useless and buggy. I uninstalled it after the first year and have never bothered with it since. Because I don't use it the horizontal mouse-wheel doesn't work, but I honestly don't know what I'd use it for anyways (everything else, including the next page/previous page buttons and vertical mouse wheel works just fine). To be fair the software has probably improved quite a bit since I last tried to use it.
After 3 years the rubber coating on the right side of the mouse has started to peel off. Otherwise I've had absolutely no issues with this bundle for over 3 years. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who's serious about performance and willing to spend a little money up front for a product that stands the test of time.

This is a very good product when new. The mouse is comfortable and the key board is quiet. There are many buttons on the mouse and key board that allow for customization and allow me to work faster with the softare I use. The mouse is very ergonomic and does not cause my hand to cramp up after extended use like other mice to. The only down side is the quality is not very good. The keyboard began to get louder with use and the keys began to stick. The left click button on the mouse got stuck and made it useless after about 1 year. I ended up buying another combo set because the MX Revolution mouse is no longer available separately, and I've not found a more comfortable mouse to use.

I have owned a fair share of logitech products. I recently decided to upgrade my keyboard / mouse combo to the mx5500 revolution series. The LCD display has a built in calculator function which is very nice and can be toggled using the calculator button on the keyboard. This function replacing the other models allowing you to open "windows" calculator with the calculator button on the keyboard. IF you are having trouble getting the LCD to discplay after you have setpoint installed, make sure you take out and put back in the batteries in the keyboard. This made it work instantly.
This product is definitely worth the purchase price

Bought this refurbished... wanted to try it first.
Awesome product well designed. HOPE TO SEE AN IMPROVED VERSION SOON.. MUST HAVE!!!
Wish the the LCD were back lit. Would love to see this keyboard with backlit keys!! I work late at night in my office under low light conditions. The email counter tops at 99.. wish they could change that or take it off... I have 6 inboxes and I get over 300 email a day, which I have to delegate...

I got my new MX 5500 and i'm loving it.
My co-worker has the old MX 5000 and the 5500 looks more refine.
Pro: Easy to set up and grate deal of options for custome control. Mouse is super comftable to use, way better than my microsoft 6000 v2. Like the battery life.
Cons: Not to grate of an LCD display. Would like to see an option with liight and a better resoution.
No way to customize the LCD option like the MX 5000, adding your name etc. Would like to see more buttoms to cuztomise with out the use of the FN key. How about on screen information update.
I use the product to work on AutoCAD and Overall I satisfy with the product. Took me a bit to get the pan key to work on the mouse, just had to set up as middle buttom and it works.
Keep upgrading the MX and im sure it will continue as grate product. Add solar power to it!!

Both keyboard and mouse have issues:
Keyboard constantly looses "bluetooth" connection and the first few worlds typed are lost. This issue is so bad that I have problems typing this review. The same problem exists on Windows. Just stay away from Bluetooth keyboards. Unifying works much better for me.
Mouse: Legendary ergonomics, but what happened to my scroll wheel click? That's right, the scroll wheel is not clickable. This is a big no-no for Linux, where middle mouse button is very important. Unfortunately, most Logitech mice suffer from this problem.
So, if anyone is interested in MX5500, you can buy one from me, on the cheap!

Super easy to setup, everything works great (and feels great) for what I use it for (bindings in games, hotkeys in browser) The keyboard has a lot of handy things, but to be honest I had this combo just to get the mouse :D
I saw some people had gripes with the mouse, but I absolutely love this thing, I wish it were sold separately so I could have a couple more! I used the old revolution before this and I'm glad it's still around, albeit in a keyboard+mouse combo. It just feels super smooth, solid, and the buttons are in great places for me. I love having the thumb wheel setup for media. If you multitask and like using hotkeys across several programs at the same time this mouse can really help you out, in my opinion! With the right setup and tweaking you can do just about anything.

Just bought this keyboard/mouse combo since it was on sale to replace my mx700 wireless mouse and keyboard. While I loved the mx700 this mouse is horrid. I've had it 20 minutes and I hate it. it has nice features but its usability leaves a lot to be desired.
- Keyboard LCD even is dark. Do not believe the pictures. It looks nothing like that, even after changing the colour scheme.
- Mouse is horrid. It doesn't track very well and is jerky.
