My wife bought this for me as a Christmas gift so I could play my Sirius subscription channels without the need for wires or laptops. I'm happy to report (or sorry to say) that with this device you don't NEED Sirius because you have the rest of the world (literally) at your fingertips.
Set up your home audio collection, internet favorites, playlists, listen to podcasts, internet radio, NPR, sports, you name it, it's here. Plus, you get full access to some of the most popular online services such as Last.fm, Slacker, and Pandora, just to name a few.
You can control this thing in a number of different ways. You can use web-based PC software called Squeezecenter (SC) to control the Squeezebox (SB) over your wireless (or wired) network or control your unit via Logitech's Squeezenetwork. Have a wi-fi enabled cellphone? Punch up the IP address of the PC that is running SC and control your SB Boom from your phone! Though not recommended, if you're really daring, you could open the port to the outside world and control your SB from anywhere in the world!
All functions that are available through SC are also available through the knob on the front of the SB. Menus are laid out in an logical order (and you can change that order to your liking) and getting from one menu to another is (usually) a snap. I say 'usually' because if you have a huge MP3 collection on your network, scrolling through all of the "S" artists can be quite daunting at times...but that leads me to the next greatest thing about this unit.
SC can be upgraded and enhanced through community/user created plug-ins...and there are a bunch of them. As an example, if you do have a ton of MP3s, install the "LazySearch" plug-in that will auto complete as you start spelling the name of the artist/song.
As for the quality of the SB Boom, ask anyone and they'll tell you that the sound that emanates from this unit rivals any super high end machine on the market. I've yet to hear a 128k mp3 sound better. You get deep, rich base tones and crisp high ends regardless of whether the volume is on 10 or 50. I'm an avid music lover but I am not an audiophile by any means. Having said that, I know the difference between good and bad sound...and the SB is just plain ole "good". If you don't believe me, check out the white papers they have written up for this thing.
Of course, ALL devices have to have a drawback, right? This one has one...you need a power source. It would've been nice to have the option for battery operated play, but there is so much going on in this thing, the batteries would probably be drained in a day. My only other complaint is you don't get two for the price of one. :-) I say that because I'm always carrying this thing around from room to room (and out into the backyard, too). It's obvious I need to invest in another one.
Also worth pointing out is the geek factor. Though you don't need to be a network administrator to get it running, you will need to be a little geeky to dig into all of the plug-ins that make this thing tick. It CAN be customized in many different ways, but that doesn't mean you need to do it.
So...stop reading, go buy it...you'll be happy you did.
