The remote is actually a carry-over from a previous product, the Squeezebox Boom. The magnet is part of the remote because the Boom has an indentation on the top by the snooze button, and the magnet held the remote in place. I doubt it has a useful function otherwise. The eyelash button is for the sleep timer. Pressing it toggles through the timer settings (15, 30, 45, 60, 90, Off or something similar). Useful when falling asleep with the radio on. The plus and minus buttons may still work to add something to a playlist or favorite or may have context sensitive uses depending on the menu or function you are on. Same with the Home button - it may not always do something. This remote and the larger, more fully featured Squeezebox 3/Classic remote work on other model squeezeboxes. They aren't specific to a certain model so all the buttons might not be useful for your product, especially the Radio with a tiny screen. You may want to check out the controller apps for Android/iPhone/iPod/iPad or use the web remote via mysqueezebox.com on a computer or laptop because you have that device's screen to take advantage of (and you don't need to be in the same room or point anything anywhere since they are network controllers).

I don't like the fact that you have to buy the battery from them for 50bucks. It should take a type of battery you can buy at the store.

The battery pack is EXCELLENT ... it works perfectly. When unplugging/plugging while the radio is playing there are NO gliches ... perfect continous sound. The play time while on the battery pack is extensive ... more than I use in a day 8+ hrs (I've never exhausted the batteries). With the bat-pack in the unit has a very solid stabile feel. The remote works well ... it does not have all of the functions of the radio front-side controls ... but then how could it, it's meant to be a tiny controller ... good for all the basic controls from across a room, etc. The full use of the radio comes alive with the bat-pack ... and the controller is very convenient when listening across a room, etc.

The battery life is great. Although it does not claim as many hours, I have run for as long as 10 hours at a stretch.
There seems to be a lot of fussing about the remote. When I bought it, I did not think I would use it that much, but in fact, I use it every night. Although it is true that it is hard to read the screen at a distance, after a while, you learn where things are in relation to others. In some cases the icons are different colors so you can identify them by color. You can do any thing with the remote that you can do on the radio. It is true that the documentation is absolutely inadequate (like the documentation for the radio itself), but if you don't know what a button does--try it. Some may work only when the Radio is performing certain operations. For instance, one reviewer complained that he did not know what the three bottom buttons do. They work the same as on a CD player--rewind, pause, fast forward. If you are playing music from your collection or a site like Pandora, FF will take you to the next track. If you are playing a podcast, it will actually fast forward. Experiment. Users who cannot identify what the various buttons do, have not yet learned to use all the functions of the Radio itself.
There is nothing so lovely as lying in bed and pressing the Sleep button without moving or rolling over. In the morning you can hit the snooze button without moving anything, but your finger. What's not to like?

The battery was the reason I bought the pack. When I checked out the remote, I could not figure out its use. It has all the features to maneuver around but the screen is so small how can you see it from the distance you would use the remote for? By the time I can read the screen on the Radio, I might as well reach over and use the controls and not the remote. About all it is good for is a power on/off button, but that's assuming I don't use all the features. And what's the magnet for? I would have been nice to know it was there because if I put it on my wallet or some magnetic media, it could delete it. I don't really think I would ever put the remote on a refrigerator door.

A lot of reviewers are bashing this thing because the remote doesn't function like a Logitech Harmony. It does the basics, can mute, volume up/down, power, etc...look at it - that is all that is on it. The remote is the same that comes with/came with the Squeezebox Duo, which you can use the 'eyelash' thing with, not the SqueezeBox RADIO. It's just a universal remote. The big winner in this is the battery. Mine lasts for HOURS on one charge (surprisingly) and is worth nearly the $50 alone. I recommend this combo, don't expect too much with the remote, but the battery is the star of the package.

No Owners Manual.
Lot of work to remove isolation cover of button battery inside. You must open (quite by force) the Remote by inserting blunt knife along the almost indetectable slot all around the upper part of the Remote - not knowing which point to start at.
After saying bye-bye to Remote and removing the isolation from battery and clicking two separated parts again together - to my surprise - it worked!!! But my nerves!!!
On/off OK
Volume up/down OK
Shifting between pre-saved pieces OK
Home button OK
Button with eye-lashes - I don't know what for this is but it works-showing number 15
Plus button and (slow forward?) do not show action
Four-way cross push button to shift pre -saved places OK
Three lowermost buttons -What for these?
To sum it up - not much impressed.

I like the fact that I can buy a battery pack, but I really don't need a remote. I'd like to see these items offered separately.

It does not control the preset channels. All it controls are power on/off, volume.
Not very useful and no user guide for the various buttons.
It came with the battery as a package. Hope some day they add at least the feature to control the "Preset" buttons.

I bought this battery&remote and I am not all that happy the way the remote sometimes acts-very slow to respond at times. Even after I point the remote at the Squeezebox the reaction time is waaaaaaaaaaaay to slow at times.
Good construction remote but need some kind of software upgrade to speed things up a bit would be well worth the extra $50+ price tag.
Like someone else wrote would be nice to have a detailed manual about the use of the product.

The squeezebox boom comes with this same remote. That manual tells you what all the buttons on the remote do so search for the squeezebox boom manual. It's out there because I just found it but the link is too long to paste.

Bought this remote and the battery. Nowhere is to find what the different buttons works for. I have tried a couple of times to find this out myself but it doesn't work. I just want to shift between my saved channels. If someone read this, please tell me how operate this remote.
