It's a good mouse, but not the best. I originally owned a Logitech LX7, but unfortunately the scroll wheel began failing and randomly clicking after over two years of use. Now that mouse was a great mouse, perfect ergonomics, and just felt right in your hands. I contacted Logitech support and since they don't make the LX7 anymore, they replaced it with this one. Don't get me wrong, it's a great mouse, works well and still has a solid weight to it after putting in two AA batteries. It doesn't seem to track as well as the LX7 on rough surfaces but that may be just because it uses a laser while the LX7 used an optical sensor. Overall easy to handle, comfortable, and tracks well.

I read some of the other reviews with grumblings about jerking and battery life. I haven't had these problems. Mine works just great. One thing you might want to check is that the tail setting is not turned on. I use a short tail myself, my personal preference. The screen retention may make it look like jerking unless you have a fast retrace.
I also don't understand the person whose mouse doesn't work on the arm of the couch. Mine works on everything - a piece of printed paper, a book cover, a walnut desktop, a kitchen counter, even the back of my wrist or my forearm from my couch 15 feet away. I have a cat, so I clean out the laser hole with a q-tip occasionally. It works just fine.
About the battery life, I don't understand. I leave my switch on all the time and no problems. Maybe the switch needs turned off in some cases, or Logitech needs to look at it.
I also have a corded gaming mouse and the feel is nearly identical, so the transition is smooth for me.

The mouse cursor onscreen just doesn't keep up with the mouse. I've cleaned the sensor, moved the receiver, reset the mouse, changed mouse pads.
There's nothing more frustrating than seeing the cursor a quarter inch from the OK button and wondering if you'll be able to get it there.

As suggested by AAZ, it is important to keep the sensor clean. My mouse was barely working and a few wipes with a q-tip fixed the problem. Thanks AAZ.

this is not a good review. just getting the word out, CLEAN THE SENSOR. i thought my mouse wasnt working right, and i was dealing with it.. then one day, i looked @ the little invisible no light emitting sensor, & it hit me. IT COUld be dirty! so I went & got a Q-tip (probably works better than blowing in there) and wiped off the dust. Good as new!
felt like an idiot, but that might solve a few people's problems....

I am a big fan of Logitech mice! They're always great and this one is no exception. The mouse takes 2 batteries, but it can run on a single battery too - the batteries are in parallel! I like the added weight of two batteries, it makes it feel substantial. If you want to make it lighter you can replace the batteries with lithium batteries - or make the mouse run on a single lithium battery. I like some weight on my mouse, so I will keep two alkaline batteries.
I have two M510 mice, one is glossy and one is matte. The matte one definitely feels nicer than the glossy. All mice should have matte finish on them.
The only thing: I wish it had higher DPS. More expensive Logitech mice can detect 1800 DPS, this unfortunately does not even come close to that. I guess you get what you pay for, this is fairly inexpensive mouse.

I've been using this mouse for 1.5 years and it's been great out-of-the- box. Battery life for me was this entire 1.5 years --that's with being on about 12 hours a day (2 Duracell AAs). Only "problem" I had was the battery life indicator never showed up. It just started malfunctioning, as mice do on low batteries. A minor glitch. Also, I never got the auto-notification of software update available. Another minor glitch. (So I knocked a "star" off the rating.) As for other issues, I have none. The ergometric is excellent, very natural. And as far as operability, I find it works on any surface, smooth or rough, and from a long distance away, if that's a need. This model's been out there for a few years --that says something. Regularly goes on sale for sensational price at office superstores.

This is buy far the best mouse I have ever owned! I'm going to make this short and sweet, I could go on and on about what I like about it. The truth is I Love It! No cons what so ever. May not be the cheapest on the market, but always keep this in mind "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR." So if you chose another mouse over this one because of its price, do yourself a favor and use the money you save to buy you a bottle of Tylenol. Your gonna need it!!!!!!

I purchased this mouse partly because I liked my previous Logitech wireless mouse which felt great in my hand and worked on many surfaces - even the arm of my sofa without a mouse pad. I can't recall the model number of that mouse but it was a smaller size and used only one battery. A major reason I purchased this mouse, the M510, was that it was advertised as having a 2-year battery life. It uses two batteries, not one, but I figured if it would last 2 years, it would be worth the extra intial cost of the mouse itself and the second battery. But no, the mouse batteries lasted no more than 3 to 4 months and I've changed them several times over the last year that I've owned this mouse. They were new, not used, batteries. Also, from the start, the mouse needed a flat surface with a mousepad to work; it would not work on upholstered arm of my couch by itself as my previous mouse would. So while the mouse does work and has some nice features, it does not live up to the advertising.

I got this mouse in a package with the wave keyboard, which I like. This mouse however falls short. For one it is a bit large for me, but I have smaller hands. Ok, fair enough. However there seem to be a trend in mice to have a solid plastic ring around them. So, if you hang your fingers off the edge of the mouse you can't operate it so easily.

I've been a programmer since 1972, using college computers before mice existed.
I've been using cordless mice since the beginning. 1st one was infrared - not a good thing.
Since then I have always used Logitech but have tried many others (at work, friends and colleagues).
Over the years I've bought just under 20, and have replaced all ball mice. Never a single problem except as mentioned just below.
It's true, I've definitely liked some Logitech mice more than others, but the M510 is absolutely the best so far in my opinion.
It's hard to understand why people use Microsoft or Apple mice, or worse, the other off brands.
Mice is what Logitech does, and they've always done it well.
I've been using Logitech since the earliest (bulky) models and only one of the earliest went bad after significant use.
I don't understand some of the reviews.
As always, the Quality seems great. If it breaks when you drop it, DON'T DROP IT. Lots of things break when dropped.
I've dropped Logitech mice on hard wood floors without any issues.
The buttons keep working fine for years and years of daily use.
Ergonomically, I think this mouse is a dream. The shape is great. The buttons are well placed, although the forward button is a slight reach. Logitech can't revise the human hand.
The Features are great. And I love being able to program the wheel button for a double-click. And the wheel works wonderfully including as a button.
The Performance is awesome. Folks comment on the pointer issues, but it's well known that glass and certain surfaces don't work well. Logitech can't re-invent light.
It works fine on my white, semi-gloss desk, but I simply use a mouse pad (not one of those cheap glossy ones).
If it works at first, then not so well, carefully blow off the laser window w/ compressed air. How can Logitech keep it clean if you don't?
If you use your sofa or pants for a mouse pad, the laser will get dirty right away. Use a mouse pad and brush it off on occasion.
Use the software and adjust the motion. For me it's as smooth as can be; never a jerky motion.
If the receiver breaks off, it's because the user mishandles the laptop, not because the receiver is cheap.
Buy a proper case for the laptop. Mine never breaks. Giving a bad review because the user breaks it is not a valuable review.
If the user replaces the batteries after 30 days and still has problems, it isn't the batteries, so don't say so.
CLEAN THE LASER WINDOW. Use FRESH batteries.
Some users say that out of the box it doesn't move the cursor. Consider trying it on another computer or USB port as the 1st one may have numerous problems.
And a refurb unit? It could have taken a dive in the swimming pool. A bad review on a refurb unit is a worthless review.
If it doesn't work out of the box, exchange it for another one and be happy.
One reviewer mentioned nearby 2.4-GHz devices. The mouse is significantly lower than that freq, but that brings up a great point: what is in between the mouse and receiver?
Water, glass, metal, distance, etc. will all affect performance. If it doesn't work well, try a perfectly clear and close path to the receiver for verification.
Some people can't trouble shoot well. The tracking can be affected by previously installed mouse software of Microsoft or other vendors.
And the mouse itself will not cause a computer to restart. Try it on another computer. Ask someone for help.
Any production process can yield a bad (out of the box) or unreliable (bad after an unreasonably short length of time) unit, but I've had many Logitech mice (incl. five M510s) and never a problem of any kind.
One reviewer bought one, it went bad, then bought another and it went bad.
Please consider that he or she is mishandling the device. Buy one, then another some time later with the same results? It's most likely the user!
Considering the quantity of Logitech products I've purchased over the years for myself and clients with no problems of any kind, I just can't deny them as the mouse masters!
I purchased five M510s at different times; 2 for me and 3 for clients. We all love it.

For a long time, I loved this mouse. It worked great! I really love how it fits in my hand and I love the back/forward controls on the side since I'm almost always on the internet (I catch myself trying to use them with other people's mouses when they aren't there). The battery lasts a very long time! I just replaced the batteries for the first time and I got this mouse last January. I also love the on/off button and the overall feel of it. However, it has stopped working on all surfaces but a blanket, a pair of sweat pants and my comforter! I find myself now using my track pad on my laptop instead just because it's less frustrating. I still use it to scroll and for the back/forward buttons but it is really frustrating to kind of switch back and forth. I'm disappointed with this and wish that it would just start working properly again. I really like the mouse design and everything else works except the laser (the whole point of a mouse!) Now I have to move out of my chair and onto my bed when I want to do mouse-intensive things (like PC gaming). Not cool.

I bought this M510 because I have had a series of Logitech products. I also liked the long battery life claim. I like the mouse and will buy Logitech again but probably not this model. 2 problems...this thing eats a set of batteries every 30 days. This time when I replaced the batteries because it was getting jerky, it didn't help. I took my trusty can of compressed air and blew out the "eye" and it works like a brand new one.

I've looked and researched other wireless mouses but most of them seem sloppily made or way to expensive. I've used a lot of Logitech's products and they do no disappoint. All I had to do was open the package, insert the plug and forget receiver and Window's 7 instantly recognized it and installed the necessary drivers needed. This mouse can be used on different surfaces and is well worth the money.

I bought this to upgrade from a working fine cheapo genius optical mouse, which worked beyond my expectations for least 2 years (and still does) , The M510 feels more comfortable , and my main reason for buying was maybe to get better at urban terror by using the extra buttons , numerous of my tech savvy friends recommended logitech and so far so good , I was prone to dropping the old mouse often (and it survived) so im hoping i be bit more gentle with this one. +1

Love the feel of this mouse and its wireless features. Unfortunately, it will not move the cursor. Tried several different surfaces, but nothing consistently worked, other than my pant leg. Back of package states "You get smooth, responsive, accurate cursor control-even on surfaces that typically cause problems for traditional optical mice, such as polished or wood-grain tables". Well apparently, by cheap HP mouse that came with my PC does a better job on my ordinary desk surface than this mouse. Either a quality control problem or a poor mouse.
