Solar Keyboard also stopped working after 5 months

Date:May 14, 2013
My solar keyboard was also doing well, and then one day, just stopped working as well. Just got off the phone with Customer Service about returning it, and having them ship me a new one.

Quit working after 6 months

Date:May 4, 2013
I was quite excited when I first learnt about this Solar Keypad and I got my friend to buy it in the states and carry it all the way back to Singapore.
It was great for the first 6 months as I used it for meetings daily. Yesterday, the keyboard just stopped working. And then I realised that I wasn't alone after reading all the reviews!! My Ipad couldn't detect the bluetooh signal from the keypad. And the keypad won't even flash green after I pressed the start key. I really think Logictech owes me and the others an explanation. This is not acceptable. Sigh....

Piece of Junk

Date:April 28, 2013
I have had this Piece of Junk for about 7 months and it only works when it wants to. It constantly looses connection and the 2 year battery life is not true!! Do not buy this POJ!!! I was looking at the Zag Folios too when I purchased this and now I wish I bought one. This is the first review I have ever written and I felt compaled to write this because this product is so horrible. Do not waste your money. And Logitech why is this product not as high quality as the rest of your products you have made?

I'm Sooooo Glad I Got This!

Date:February 2, 2013
I have had this folio for eight months. I was hesitant to buy it at first, because there weren't very many reviews from real users yet, but I just liked the look, and especially the action of the keys. The solar power was a big plus, as was the thin profile. I have to say, I love it. Works like a dream. Stays charged for a long time. I know this because I always forget to set my iPad down solar panels up. It stays connected to my iPad flawlessly. I've never had a problem with it. It protects the iPad well, though I've never dropped it. I cannot laud the praises of this solar keyboard folio enough! There are a few issues, however, that I'm hoping Logitech will fix on the next model. 1) My biggest issue: It doesn't flip to vertical, which I think is a necessity. 2) The little "feet" that lock it into it's two positions are too small, and they often slip out of place. 3) It doesn't come in enough colors. Even with these shortcomings, I would buy it again!

Worked great then it didn't

Date:January 18, 2013
Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. I'm on my second solar keyboard and case. The first lasted six months with very hard usage. Then it stopped working. I bought a second one thinking it was a fluke. Now my second one has stopped working after three months. I thought Logitech was a reputable company that produced quality products. Not this time. I will be anxious to see how the company stands behind this product!

Goes with me everywhere

Date:December 30, 2012
I have had the solar keyboard since Christmas. A great surprise gift.
So far everything works very well. The two positions for the keyboard are perfect for me. You have the typing position, and the media position, where you use the ipad as normal but with the help of some keys on the keyboard. Great idea to incorporate the media position.
I find this keyboard to be light, some people dont think so, but I do. I gave it four stars for ergonomics because there is no tablet keyboard that can be made comparable to a regular keyboard. There is one compromise that everyone has to make.
The bluetooth connection between the keyboard and the tablet works flawlessly. When I close the folio, my ipad goes to sleep as usual. Some reviewers have said that the magnets are not strong enough to put the ipad to sleep, they are wrong. I believe that is that they are not closing the folio correctly. Look at the package and you will understand the proper way to close it.
It is great to use my ipad with the keyboard and as a touch device.
One complaint that I have, and Logitech need to address this issue is, the material by the battery an d where the folio folds, is made of a very thin, weak, type of plastic/polyurethane thing. During five days of use I can see the legs of the folio leaving marks on the outside. Stretch marks, that I think might with heavy use will put a hole on the material.
After noticing this, I decided to do some prevented maintenance, and I took small and thin stereo pads and put in the location affected. I know that will keep it safe for me.
Overall a great keyboard that I will use for a long time. And being solar just make the deal sweeter. Dont have to worry about charging it. Just leave it anywhere with the cells up toward any light. Almost forgot.
Reviewers have said that the solar panel scratch easily. I decide for now to leave the clear cover that it came with covering the panels on the folio until I find a simpler solution. I am thinking of cutting some left over ipad screen covers to size, and apply it to the solar panel to keep them from scratching. Even though scratches do not diminish the panel's ability to charge the folio.
Enjoy yours and a Happy New Year to all !

Very Innovative but Very Fragile

Date:December 4, 2012
Bought one of this because of its nice new features to Ipad keyboards, solar is a plus and as well as the protection it gives. It is not that thin kind of case but you won't mind it because this is packed with useful criteria. But beware, this is very impermanent, that is the only downside of this product. It is usable for a couple of months as what other says and will eventually stop working. Mine suddenly stop working after a month or so of usage. So think about spending your money to a nice featured product that will only last a matter of weeks. I was caught by its coolness, never thought about its lifespan.

Have used this product for over 6 months with no issues at all. Yes I did get some small holes were the rubber feet meet the cover but a little custom gray duct tape took care of that small issue. Unit is simply rocck solid so far

Worked fine for a couple of months until it broke

Date:November 12, 2012
I was somewhat satisfied with this keyboard case when I first got it. It worked as described, although it's not something that will protect your iPad well if there's a problem. I find that it works best in your home. Even so, after a couple of months, mine broke down.
I've been using the solar folio keyboard for a couple of months, about 5, before it completely stopped working in Typing mode. I can still make it work in Media mode, but I can no longer use the keyboard to type. It's a bit ridiculous for such an expensive keyboard to break so quickly. I thought it would last for a long time.
The keyboard case was rarely taken out of my home, and stayed fully charged.

logitech almost hits the mark

Date:November 7, 2012
Just picked up this keyboard from staples for $129. The keyboard/case is an excellent case and the keyboard is amazing. Its the perfect size and typing on it is very easy. The keyboard only works when its situated in the up position locked in. Very easy to set up.
the bad:
The case is a bit on the heavy side. Probably the heaviest of the case on the market. If you plan to use your Ipad folded up in bed or while traveling this case is not for you. The battery pack runs through the middle and makes it a little hard to use.
The case also doesn't close all the way and it keeps the Ipad on. The keyboard does not have a light on it so its hard to see the grey while typing in the dark.
I would wait for the second verison to come out before spending $129 on this one.

Bridges the gap between iPad and MacBook

Date:October 12, 2012
I've had an iPad now for the better part of 2 years. I purchased the Logitech Solar Folio Keyboard a few weeks ago (my first iPad keyboard). Until then, the iPad was a casual reader, media player, browser device. Anything that required serious typing was reserved for the MacBook. I have found this keypad to be more than suitable for a majority stuff I do in email or Pages. I'm not sure if I'd be satisfied if I was a student or business person using it multiple hours per day, but it's perfect for me. Combining this little unit with the iPad and an Airprint printer now makes for a great compromise to a traditional laptop/pritner combo. The only reservations are that the iPad holder is a snap in style case. Not the easiest to remove. I've read complaiints about the lack of a closure. I don't have an issue with that. I've also seen gripes about the fact the the rear part of the base when in the stand position is not rigid. At times, it's more of a benefit than detriment. The keyboard is smart as well. It can be folded behind and the iPad can be held in portrait mode. Obviously this is not ideal because the case is quite heavy, but it is usable and the keyboard powers itself off when used this way. Slick unit. After using it for a few weeks, I can't give it up. I haven't used any others so hard to say whether it's better or worse than other options but I love the fact that I don't have to plug it in and the keyboard is good quality and I can type very fast on it. Overall, awesome unit. Highly recommended. Backlight would be cool.

Solid feel good keypad

Date:September 26, 2012
I have been using this keyboard cover for several months now and I am quite pleased with the keypad in general. The keys are easy to use, have a really nice feel to them and seem very solid and should provide many years of use. The bluetooth feature for use with the ipad works perfectly and I have had no issues with the battery life. I only charge with light when I happen to think about it which isn't very often. Really nice not having to worry about batteries. Sometimes the extra keys for use while watching video don't always seem to work just right....will want to play music instead of the movie....until i switch back and forth between the two. But when it does work it is nice to have. You will get really spoiled to the keypad instead of the ipad keypad. What is really nice is the way it knows when you have the iPad in position for the keypad to turn on which keeps the battery from being drained. The keypad has a very solid feel while sitting on your lap in bed and doesn't seem to want to fall off of your lap. The only complaint I have is that there are two worn spots from the little feet when the keypad folds flat. If the covering had been made of leather instead of imitation leather I don't think there would of been any wearing. This is why I had to give a lower rating for the quality. Other than that I would definitely recommend this cover keypad.

Nice Keyboard - But Not for Presenting

Date:August 26, 2012
I have had this keyboard for about one week. I do like the keyboard itself, and found it to be useful for typing. The keys provide good feedback, and I am able to type fairly easily. The keyboard is a little cramped, but most in this category are.
Viewing angle is good for typing. Even when it is on my lap, it works pretty well. It is best to use this on a desk or table, as it is a little flimsy when I am using it on my lap. I wish it were a little sturdier.
The cover is "OK". I use this for business, and I would like a nicer finish. The corner of the keyboard tends to pick up dust. I am able to brush it off easily, however. I scratched my solar panel the first day. Not a big deal, but quality could be better. I would like to have the panel on the other side so that it could charge while I am working, but it scratches so easily that it is probably better to leave it where it is so it is out of sight while working.
I intend to use this while presenting powerpoint on a projector, and this is where I am really disappointed. While all of the holes for ports are in the correct places, the opening was not large enough for a VGA display adapter, as the Apple VGA display adapter is larger than than the power adapter that is provided, and will not fit through the molded opening on this case. This is a big miss for the corporate workplace. I will likely return this item as the only way that I can connect to a VGA projector (the kind that most companies still use) is to pull the iPad out of the case. That is a pain, and now how I had planned on using the device.
The other complaint that I have is that there is no way to view in portrait mode. You only get the landscape layout. Not a deal-breaker for me, but certainly a drawback. I will see if some of the other products on the market can better accomodate my needs.

Found it!

Date:August 2, 2012
I love this keyboard and everything about the product. The case is great, the keyboard rocks, solar is perfect. The keyboard snaps to life as sonn as I place the iPad in the slots for typing mode.
I read all of the reviews and I have to say that I disagree with all of the negative ones. The magent for sleep mode is fine. If my iPad comes on I dont realize it and with the screen lock fetaure that I already used...it isnt going to stay on for long. The case is very nice. I didnt expect an Otter Box so it actually exceeded my expectations on look and features. The solar panel does scratch easy but i dont care about that and it isnt going to affect its ability to harness power.
The price was certainly higher than all of the rest...but then again it is better than all the rest. So I am very happy with my investment. Using it right now to enter this review.

Needs better closure features

Date:July 15, 2012
Picked this up in an airport tech store and slipped my iPad into it. It has major good points: fantastic keyboard, the feel of typing, great functions of the keys, pairs easily to the iPad, nice color scheme.
This folio has two significant problems that are deal breakers for me.
As stated in other reviews, the magnets on the cardboard box the folio comes in are stronger than the pitiable magnets of this iPad case. The magnets are not strong enough to prevent the case from opening when held by one side, or prevent the two sides from sliding apart when slipped into a bag. The folio would benefit from a strap or stronger magnets.
The other issue is that (obviously) the iPad must be able to tilt away from its half of the case in order to perch at the right angle above & behind the keyboard. And it does. However, there is no way to secure the two portions of this half of the case together (magnets, velcro, snaps, etc.) so that the whole thing doesn't flop around when setting up to use the iPad.
In short, the case is unwieldy. If not for these two issues, I would purchase in a heartbeat.

Great Keyboard for iPad 2 (and 3)

Date:June 28, 2012
I just spent the last week trying out several keyboards and decided to keep the Logitech Solar Folio for iPad 2.
I tried out the Zagg Folio - the keyboard was very good and a very sturdy & protective case, but the keyboard was a little cramped for me and my hands hurt after a short while of typing.
The new Logitech UltraThin Keyboard was a great keyboard, however the magnetic hinge was not solid and the two halves (keyboard and iPad) would not stay closed - easy to slide apart. Plus no protection for the iPad back - only the glass front. .
The Belkin Folio for iPad 2 had a very good size keyboard (biggest out of all these), however I did not like the velcro aspect to having to remove the keyboard to get an idea viewing angle while typing on the iPad. The Folio is also flimsy and not as sturdy to prop the iPad as others. Also a bit more work to remove the iPad daily.
I read reviews on this Solar Keyboard and picked it up a few days ago. The keyboard is excellent, even though it is a bit smaller than the Belkin. However, I did timed typing tests on myself and the Solar Keyboard consistantly gave me the fastest times over the Belkin, and I thought the Belkin keyboard was very good too.
This solar folio keyboard has a great feel with true "chicklet" keys for feedback, and very responsive. I found the Belkin keyboard to sometimes lag when typing. I've already used this Solar Keyboard a lot over the past few days, including typing notes from a meeting where I had the folio/iPad resting on my lap as I was in a lecture theater-type setting with no desks. It works fine that way. All the iPad function keys work as advertised and the keys are well placed for spacing. I wish the delete key was a tiny bit bigger, however it has not really been an issue.
The case material is solid and getting the iPad in and out is easy. I take my iPad out every night to dock for charging. I have read some comments about the solar panel outside plastic showing scratches easier, and this is true, After only a few days it already has some small scratches on it. However, this does not affect performance and charging at all. The battery has maintained a solid charge since I starting using the keyboard and do use it every day.
A negative comment on the solar panel is that I wish it was on the iPad side of the folio, as opposed to the keyboard side. It is always rubbing against the table and also can't charge while using the keyboard. Had Logitech put the panel on the iPad side, it could still charge while using the keyboard. Also might not get so many scratches as this side would be up all the time when using.
I've also read some comments about the magnets not turning off/on the iPad screen and folks worried about iPad running down on power if left on in a bag, purse, etc. If you close it the proper way, this works all the time. I have a security lock enabled on my iPad so once it is locked after closing the folio, even if it opened up in a bag, the screen would come on, look for a password and then shut off again automatically after a few seconds if no password is typed in. This solves any issues related to not proper sleep/awake.
Also on magnets, there are none to keep the folio closed, so that is another small issue I have with this product. I wish they would have incorporated a stretchy band (like the Targus iPad Case) to keep the folio closed. This is not a big deal for me but a nice to have.
The two positions for the iPad are fine for me and the playback mode/buttons work very well.
All the cutouts line up correct and the case is a quality product with good materials and finishes.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs a portable keyboard with their iPad. I also have the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Origami Case for it, however that setup is bigger and bulkier than this combo case/keyboard so I have now moved to my Solar as my full time keyboard to use with my iPad 2..
The case material is sound and should last many years.
In summary, this is a fantastic iPad folio case with one of the best keyboards out there. Great quality materials, responsive keyboard, easy to pair (set it and forget it) and looks very nice and slim. The Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio for iPad 2 and 3 is an absolute necessity for anyone who needs to type and wants to use their iPad instead of a laptop or desktop. I find I am using my iPad about 60% of the time and my laptop (MacBook Pro) the rest. This keyboard adds great fuctionality to my iPad in a minimalistic package.
Only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because of the inablity to keep the folio closed (like with a clasp or similar - see the Belkin or Targus for examples).
It is pricy but I did not want to sacrifice usability for a cheap price. I definately recommend this product and I enocurage you to go to your local best buy, purchase this and try it out before you make a final decsion to keep it.

great keyboard but...

Date:June 26, 2012
The keyboard has a tremendous typing feel. The rubber stops that allow for positioning of the screen for video viewing versus typing are ingenious. It's compact, slim, lightweight and sleek. However, the on off function is dismal. Although there was a great magnet in the packaging to hold the 2 halves of the box closed, there is nothing to hold the folio closed. Unless you seat it exactly right, the ipad does not shut off. If I just close it casually without paying special attention, it stays on about one third of the time. If you put it in a briefcase, it could shift and turn on. I find myself checking it again and again to make sure this hasn't happened. This is a real miss. I am returning this one, but if the problem is addressed I will snap one up.
